Boho Chic Is Back – But Did It Ever Leave?

Here's a look back at the repeating trend

2024 was certainly an iconic year for fashion trends. Throughout the year we saw a lot of leopard print, bubble skirts, metallics and pops of red.

Although we are still massive fans of these trends, there is a major style making a comeback this year. It’s already starting to! We are referring to ‘boho chic’ or ‘bohemian chic’.

Expect to see a lot of throwback pieces in style this year. From fringe boots to lace trimmed blouses to disc belts, it’s all in.

Bohemian style first emerged in the early 19th century. The movement was led by artists, writers and creative individuals that wanted to break society’s rigid fashion standards.

A century later, the bohemian lifestyle became very popular between the 1960s and 1970s. This way of dressing began to become heavily inspired by hippies or free-spirited people.

When the Beatles took a trip to India in 1968, fashion started to become influenced by Asia. Loose garments such as kimono shawls and more structured pieces like patterned vests were adapted into the boho style. Legends like Stevie Nicks, Kate Bush and Janis Joplin rocked this style during these decades.

Boho chic was seen less in the 1980s but music icon Madonna embodied the style into a lot of her performance outfits. She wore lacey skirts and layered tops and jewellery.

Even though the 1990s was a decade prominently ruled by grunge fashion, boho wasn’t fully dead. In the popular sitcom Friends, we saw Lisa Kudrow’s character Phoebe Buffay wear a lot of boho inspired outfits. Phoebe often wore flowing skirts and mixed patterns that somehow always looked good together. Tom Ford also a released a spring 1999 ‘hippie-chic’ collection for Gucci.

Fast forward to the early 2000s, this is when boho chic took off and was extremely trendy. Fashion icons like Kate Moss and Sienna Miller began to wear bohemian style outfits to Glastonbury Festival.

Light patterned dresses and asymmetrical skirts were everywhere. New pieces like peasant blouses were introduced too.  The boho chic of the 2000s was a more sophisticated take on the grunge look from the 1990s.

You could argue that boho chic never really went away as the style also conquered the 2010s. People continued to mix materials such as suede and denim. Celebrities such as Vanessa Hudgens, Kendall Jenner and Blake Lively kept the trend alive throughout this decade.

The music festival Coachella also contributed massively to the growth of the style. Boho clothing was ideal for the hot and sunny festival environment.

Now a few years later, it seems that boho chic is back better and ever for 2025. Recently, designers like Isabel Marant and Chloé dominated the A/W 24 catwalk with fringe boots, patterned fabrics and flowing silhouettes.
