Although few of us managed to lounge poolside with an excellent book in tow this summer, the lack of foreign travel still didn’t dampen our spirit for reading.

Whether the sun is shining or the Irish rain is back in full force, we’re always in the mood to get stuck into a good book. If you’re the same, you’re in luck, because resident STELLAR bookworm Hannah Hillyer has rounded up four of the best new summer releases to get on over the next month.

Careless by Kirsty Capes 

One of many incredible debuts we got our hands on recently was this, and trust us, it’s one you’ll now be seeing everywhere. The book is firmly described as not being a love story, as we meet Beth who’s just found out she’s pregnant.

She doesn’t want to tell her foster mother, her social worker, and least of all the person she knows she should tell, Boy. This is the summer that Beth leaves girlhood behind and enters a new chapter, whether she wants to or not. This book is totally addictive, and is honest and insightful at how it covers female friendship as well as a fresh take on the coming of age novel. We loved it!

Rememberings by Sinead O’Connor

Since the 90s, O’Connor has been a cultural icon. Becoming famous at the age of just 21, she’s traveled the world with her music as well as had her battle with mental illness openly discussed in the media.

Now, the singer is telling her own side to the story. Ever since she shaved her head and ripped up a picture of the pope on SNL, she’s been singled out as a rebel and has often reveled in the title. The memoir goes deeper into her battles with depression, addiction, love, her conversion to Islam as well as what really happened between her and Price after she covered ‘Nothing Compares 2 U’. Despite the fact that is, at times, grim, it is of course told with Sinead’s signature humor.

Irish women in fiction are having a moment, and we were excited to get our hands on Tipp native Eimear Ryan’s debut novel.

With the grandfather, she never met being a famous poet and the feeling of having no identity if her own, she begins digging into her family history to discover more about his past, as well as herself along the way.

Through her search, Beth uncovers secrets that not even her family know about and the results are gripping as they illuminate her own life. This is a stunning debut from this new Irish talent, as well as being an exciting page-turner it’s also a perfect depiction of how it feels to be lost as you embark on a new chapter of your life.

The Echo Chamber by John Boyne

With a string of wildly successful books under his belt ranging from the heartbreaking ‘The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas’ to the much-loved, ‘The Hearts Invisible Furies’, a new novel from John Boyne is always a treat.

This time the Irish author is turning his gaze to cancel culture as his latest, ‘The Echo Chamber’ looks at how something as small as a Tweet or a Facebook post can ruin someone’s life and reputation forever. At least, that’s what happens to the Cleverly family when some questionable opinions turn their world upside down. This satirical novel is both accurate cultural commentary as well as being completely absurd and hilarious. We couldn’t put it down.
