The Met Gala is set to take place on 5th May 2025, but that doesn’t mean celebrities aren’t already preparing. After all, it is the biggest night in fashion, and planning the perfect outfit must come with a lot of pressure.

To ensure no one has an excuse for not following the theme, Anna Wintour makes sure to announce it a full seven months in advance.

This year, the theme is especially significant, marking a monumental moment in fashion that deserves to be celebrated.

This year’s theme, Superfine: Tailoring Black Style, celebrates Black culture and the significance of clothing and style in shaping Black identities—particularly in men’s tailoring and the concept of Black dandyism.

For those unfamiliar, Black dandyism refers to men who place a strong emphasis on appearance and personal grooming. Notably, this is the first Met Gala theme focused on menswear since 2003, so we’re expecting male celebrities to fully embrace the theme this year.

This theme is culturally very significant and a step in the right direction for the fashion industry. For an industry that’s known to be exclusionary in terms of race and body type this is such a special moment in fashion history and we really have to give props to Wintour for this one.

The co-chairs for 2025 have us beyond excited. It’s every best dressed man you can think of that emulates the meaning and spirit of dandyism – Pharrell Williams, Colman Domingo, Lewis Hamilton, A$AP Rocky and, of course, Anna Wintour.

NBA legend LeBron James is also on the list as an honorary co-chair, we are impressed to say the least.

So what can we expect?

Well it’s absolutely essential that this theme is executed with care and respect. This is the first time the exhibition is showcasing Black culture and fashion in such a celebratory way, so capturing the essence of this theme is crucial. If you’re not on theme, simply don’t attend!

Following criticism aimed at the Costume Institute’s lack of Black representation in the wake of the Black Lives Matter movement, this theme signals a hopeful step forward in the fashion industry– though it will be another seven months before we see how attendees bring it to life.

Met Gala queen herself miss Rihanna recently spoke with Access Hollywood, saying: “This theme has made me just respect [the Met Gala] so much more, they’re bringing it to the forefront on a platform where we’ve been kind of hidden and it’s just accepting it.”

So, what can we expect celebrities to wear? Anticipate sharp tailoring and modern spins on classic suiting, with styles ranging from African traditional dress to Dapper Dan-inspired ensembles.

We’re likely to see tributes to today’s leading Black designers, including Pharrell Williams, Grace Wales Bonner, LaQuan Smith, Christopher John Rogers, and the late Virgil Abloh.

And in true Met Gala fashion, we can count on a spectacle of drama and theatrics: think capes, hats, feathers, corsets, and veils… absolute fashion heaven. The more theatrics, the better, we say!

This is such an amazing theme and we really hope our favourite celebs come through and give us some seriously impressive and well thought out looks next year.
