A Much Needed Sabrina Carpenter/Shawn Mendes/Camila Cabello Timeline

It was Short n' Sweet, but it's making waves...

If you’ve been anywhere near the internet these past few weeks, you’ve likely seen a few things about Sabrina Carpenter, Shawn Mendes, and Camila Cabello.

Sabrina released her long awaited sixth album Short n’ Sweet last month, and while many of us were expecting the entire thing to be about Barry Keoghan, there was another relationship seemingly heavily featured.

… The love triangle between Sabrina, Shawn, and Camila.

Let’s start from the beginning.

November 2015 – Shawn and Camila rumours are rife

Shawn and Camila have been hanging out a lot since meeting at the VMAs, but always maintain that they’re just friends.

In November, they release their first song together, ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer,’ which Camila claims is not about Shawn and someone else she is “talking to.”

October 2016 – Shawn denies all

Shawn denies that he and Camila are dating, and says they are “really close friends.”

He tells PEOPLE:  “She is one of those people who is just very easy to connect with and still, to this day, is one of my greatest friends. You find that instant connection with people, and she’s one of them.”

June 2019 – Señorita Gate

Shawn and Camila release the video for ‘Señorita’ – and it’s steamy. In it, Camila plays a waitress who Shawn, a diner, falls for.

They go to a motel, grind on each other, and dance.

August 2019 – The birthday post

Further sparking chat, Camila shares a happy birthday post for Shawn on Instagram writing: “Happy birthday to this magic human. I love you!!!”

The pair had previously been spotted holding hands and kissing, and later performed ‘Señorita’ at the VMAS.

September 2019 – Relationship confirmed!

Shawn and Camila finally confirmed they are dating, as Shawn tells fans: “Honestly, I wanna… talk to you guys about this stuff but it’s not just me in the relationship. There’s another person involved and I can’t say things that I feel. It’s not just me deciding you know?”

Camila later tells Elle she wants to keep things private: “People can say whatever they want to say. They can speculate, but at the same time, we are going to live our own lives, enjoy it, and fall for each other like nobody is watching.”

March 2020 – Shawn and Cam cover ‘Kiss Me’… again

At the beginning of the pandemic, the couple give a glimpse into their home life, as they reveal that they are spending Covid together watching movies.

… And re-covering Ed Sheeran songs.

November 2020 – Camila opens up

Later that year, the firmer Fifth Harmony star writes on Instagram: “It’s not just the happy blissful moments you see in pictures and videos.

“When you’re in a relationship with someone, it feels like they are this mirror reflecting yourself back to you — I constantly have to confront my fears, my anxieties, my insecurities, my patterns of thinking, my beliefs about life and about myself.

“It’s not as simple as it looks in pictures sometimes. sometimes, it’s messy and uncomfortable and ugly lol.” Interesting…

September 2021 – Met Gala

The next year, the couple hard launch themselves onto the Met Gala red carpet.

November 2021 – Shawn and Camila break up

In November, the pair decide to call it quits, both writing on Instagram Stories:  “Hey guys, we’ve decided to end our romantic relationship but our love for one another as humans is stronger than ever.

“We started our relationship as best friends and will continue to be best friends. We so appreciate your support from the beginning and moving forward.” How amicable.

March 2022 – S and C on life after love

In 2022, the pair both speak about breaking up and moving on. On a video on Twitter, Shawn gets honest saying: “When you’re like, breaking up with someone, you think it’s the right thing to do, you don’t realise all this shit that comes after it.

“Like, who do I call when I’m like, in a panic attack? Who do I call when I’m like, f*cking, on the edge? I think that’s the reality that kinda I am on my own now… finally I am actually on my own.”

Camila also tells Zane Lowe: “I f*cking love Shawn. And I feel like there is literally nothing but love for him.”

She had recently released ‘Bam Bam’, a track with the lyrics: “You said you hated the ocean, but you’re surfin’ now / I said I’d love you for life, but I just sold our house / We were kids at the start, I guess we’re grown-ups now, / Couldn’t ever imagine even havin’ doubts / But not everything works out”.

February 2023 – Shawn and Sabrina spotted

Shawn and Sabrina are first rumoured to be dating as blind item page DeuxMoi writes: “Spotted Shawn Mendes and Sabrina Carpenter on clearly a date at Horses anon pls. Thursday night.

“Sabrina was in a little brown miniskirt and clearly was Shawn newly shaved head wearing white sweater. They were verrrry comfortable.”

Later that month, the pair are spotted walking around LA together.

March 2023 – Things heat up for S and S

Fuel is only added to the fire when Shawn and Sabrina are seen leaving Miley Cyrus’ album party together, and stealing sneaky glances at one another at the Vanity Fair Oscars after party.

It isn’t long before the relationship is seemingly confirmed to Entertainment Tonight: “Shawn and Sabrina are seeing each other. They have been hanging out a lot and trying to keep things low-key.

“They were at a birthday party together a couple weeks ago and were cute together. Shawn is happy.”

March 2023 (again) – Shawn denies it all

Shawn tells RTL Boulevard, that he and Sabrina are, in fact, not together. “We are not dating,” he says.

Well okay then.

April 2023 – Shawn and Camila reunite at Coachella

It seems as though these two are officially back on, as they share a kiss at Coachella.

PEOPLE later reports that the couple were taking things slow, but are “very happy to be reconnected.”

“They are enjoying daytime strolls and nighttime casual dinners out,” said the source. “They have been hanging out just the two of them… They are very cute, keep holding hands and laughing.”

June 2024 – Camila confirms she and Shawn have split again

While promoting her new album XOXO, Camila shares that she feels lucky to have an ex like Shawn, and that they both decided to end things.

“It wasn’t even like a decision. I think you’re just kind of like, ‘Yeah this doesn’t really… it’s not a fit — it doesn’t feel right,'” she tells Call Her Daddy.

“Luckily, I was in a place in my life where… it took us both less time to be like, ‘This doesn’t feel right, and we don’t really need to try so hard to make it work. It’s all good, let’s move on.’”

July 2024 – Shawn and Camila hang out

The pair are seen sitting together at a football match in Miami. A source later confirms that they are just friends.

August 2024 – Short n’ Sweet release

Sabrina’s sixth studio album is released, and it looks pretty likely that at least some of these tracks are about Shawn and Camila.

Let’s take a look at the lyrics for ‘Taste’: “I heard you’re back together and if that’s true / You’ll just have to taste me when he’s kissin’ you / If you want forever, and I bet you do / Just know you’ll taste me too.”

And ‘Coincidence’: “Last week, you didn’t have any doubts / This week, you’re holding space for her tongue in your mouth / Now shе’s sendin’ you some pictures wеarin’ less and less / Tryna turn the past into the present tense.”

Sabrina also tells Zane Lowe that she didn’t just call the album Short n’ Sweet because of her size.

“I thought about some of these relationships and how some of them were the shortest I’ve ever had, and they affected me the most,” she says.

September 2024 – Camila responds to Sabrina (kinda?)

A few weeks later Camila shares a TikTok singing along to her song, ‘June Gloom’ with the caption, “hope it’ll burn out, but it just gets bigger,” alongside an eye roll emoji.

The song is about coming to terms with a partner’s ex. Shawn has yet to comment (TikTok or otherwise).
