Mona McSharry Becomes First Irish Swimmer To Make Olympic Final In 25 Years

Sligo swimmer, Mona McSharry is making history.

The 20-year-old swimmer has become the second ever Irish swimmer to reach an Olympic final, the first one in 25 years, coming fourth in her semi-final at a time of 1:06.59, seeing her through to tomorrow’s final in eighth place.

She will be competing in the 100m breaststroke and admitted that it’s “amazing” to be at the Olympics, her first one ever and she’s through to the finals.

“This is my first event ever in the Olympics and I’ve made a final,” the Sligo native told RTÉ Sport.

“With the past year and a half that everyone’s had, it’s unbelievable. No one’s given a medal before they go in. We all have a chance. I’m definitely going to go for it.”

Swim Ireland, Ireland’s national governing body of swimming also congratulated Mona on her swim and making it through to the finals.
