Representation in the beauty industry has improved over the past few years, thanks in no small part to the work of black makeup artists and entrepreneurs. Here are six black-owned beauty brands to get on your radar.
Uoma Beauty
After a decade working as a beauty industry executive, Sharon Chuter decided that there was room for a brand that catered to black women and their stories. And so in 2019, she created Uoma (from the Igbo word for ‘beautiful’), which bears the tagline: “Beauty comes in every colour, and we intend to wear them all.” With a cult-like following already after just one year in business, expect Uoma Beauty to be the brand on everyone’s lips soon.
Hero Product: Say What?! Foundation
The Say What?! foundation is one of our favourite beauty discoveries of 2020. Lightweight yet long-wearing, and able to be built up or sheered out as required, it leaves skin looking glowy and beautiful. It’s available in 51 shades, which are divided into six custom formulas designed to suit the needs of different skin tones. That’s the kind of thoughtfulness we adore in a beauty brand.
Danessa Myricks Beauty
A veteran makeup artist, Danessa Myricks built her career working with brands like Benefit and Kiss before launching her own super-inclusive line. Innovation is the name of her game, and her multifunctional products are favourites of fellow MUAs and Instagram beauty stalwarts Katie Jane Hughes and Nikki Makeup.
Hero Product: ColourFix 24-Hour Cream Colour
Think of her 24-Hour Cream Colour as grown up face paint. The long-wearing, smudge-proof product can be worn on eyes, lips or face, and comes in all sorts of colours and textures. The Foils are particularly gorgeous, with a holographic sheen that really pops.

Pat McGrath Labs
Pat McGrath is the makeup artist’s makeup artist, earning the nickname ‘Mother’. If you’ve ever admired a look on the catwalks of Fashion Week, chances are she dreamed it up. It’s totally unsurprising then that the British MUA’s own brand is of the highest calibre, from the formulas to the packaging (and yep, the price). This is makeup at its most luxurious, and for the biggest beauty obsessives, a collector’s item.
Hero Product: Mothership V Eyeshadow Palette – Bronze Seduction
We are very sorry to report, given the dizzying price, that Pat’s eyeshadows are STUNNING. Her metallic and glittery shades manage to be totally unique in the over-saturated market, offering serious pigment with chameleonic reflects and glassy sparkle. The warm-toned Bronze Seduction palette is a bestseller, but each Mothership palette is special in its own right.
Briogeo
A big seller in Sephora in the US, haircare brand Briogeo is now available in Ireland via Space NK and Cult Beauty. With her line, owner Nancy Twine wanted to take the guesswork out of caring for your hair, creating individual regimes for specific hair textures. She’s also big on clean beauty, too – all the products are cruelty-free with no sulphates, artificial dyes, or silicones.
Hero Product: Don’t Despair, Repair! Deep Conditioning Mask
Hair crying out for a little TLC? The Don’t Despair, Repair! intensive weekly treatment gives your gruaig essential hydration from the off, while also protecting it from future damage. Simply pop it on for five to ten minutes after washing, rinse, and enjoy glossy, healthy-looking hair. Your head will thank you.

Beauty Bakerie
Beauty Bakerie founder Cashmere Nicole launched the brand in 2011 in the middle of a battle with breast cancer. Eight years on, it has amassed a legion of fans (Beyoncé and Cardi B amongst them) and is stocked by some of the biggest retailers in the world, including Boots here in Ireland. The product names and packaging are inspired by Cashmere’s obsession with sweet treats and deserts – the makeup sponges even come housed in little egg boxes. How cute is that?
Hero Product: Lip Whip
Want a lip product that will not budge for the day? Try the Lip Whip, which had a viral moment on Instagram when beauty fans discovered it stayed put even when held under running water. The ideal product for this period of essential mask-wearing, surely.
Juvia’s Place
Inspired by ancient African royalty, Juvia’s Place is best known for its high-impact eyeshadows, which it claims to be the most pigmented in the world. We can’t exactly verify that, but they certainly pack a punch. Founder Chichi Eburu started the range with “just $2000 and a dream”, as she says, and is now giving away grants of up to ¢50k to up-and-coming black entrepreneurs. A brand with a conscience.
Hero Product: The Nubian Eyeshadow Palette
While Juvia’s Place is all about colour, its bestselling palette is composed of browns, bronzes, and golds. Many neutral eyeshadow shades can turn ashy on darker skin tones, but the Nubian promises to be universally flattering across the spectrum. A perfect everyday palette for those who like to stay in the warm neutral colour family.
